Large flock of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos and other birds of Kings Creek Station

On Thursday morning I started travelling from Kings Creek Station campground to Areyonga. Along the way I saw a large flock of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos feeding in amongst the remnants of a recent fire:

Grey-crowned Babbler and Port Lincoln Parrot

These two are a couple of the locals around my house. The Babblers are normally in groups of 5-10 and the Parrots are normally in 2s or 3s around the house.

Parrots and Bronzewings in the late afternoon

Driving back from Kintore yesterday, I stopped in at Kunoth Bore for a quick look to see if anything interesting was around.

Saw these delightful Mulga and Port Lincoln Parrots and lots of Common Bronzewings coming down to the dam to drink. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Happy Birding!

Birds Around the Backyard

One of the kids was sick today, so I spent a bit of the time in the backyard while they were resting. The birds are ones we often get in the backyard, but I generally leave the camera inside when they are around these days. Today was different.

First on show was a very friendly Port Lincoln Parrot:

The Yellow-throated Miners were not as prolific as normal, but these were more than happy to be quite close as I snapped away:

A Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike sat on a branch in one of our gums:

But by far the most entertainment came from the White-plumed Honeyeaters. There are a number of families that frequent our backyard and today the young ones were quite demanding. They are noisy without being harsh on the ears, and they can be inquisitive and come quite close to the camera. I had to zoom out rather than in on a few occasions which I really enjoy as it tells me the birds are relaxed around me to come that close.

Hawkeye replaced in cricket for next season

Breaking news. Port Lincoln Parrot has replaced Hawkeye as the eye in the sky for runouts at the cricket for season 2011/12. Training hard in a secret location, our reporters have spotted the new system in its early days. We only hope they have enough spare parts to last all the tests, one-day wonders and the 29/29s!

Port Lincoln Parrot

I love all parrots, love their colours, love their personalities, and the Ringneck certainly has personality. These birds hang out in the backyard, and can be found all over the place at Alice Springs. The one in the photograph was on the back fence.
