A short stopover on the way back into town and the noise was amazing. The budgerigars are out in force, into the hundreds if not thousands. With the noise they were making, it was hard to hear the higher pitch of the cockatiels. I stood by a tree for about ten minutes and I could hear something clawing or pecking at the wood, but I couldn't see it on the tree. Finally I found the female Cockatiel standing guard over a hole where a branch had once been, and sure enough, in due time, the male appeared from within the hollow:
From behind me I heard a rapidly approaching group and looked up to see both Budgies and Cockatiels wheeling and circling. The shots aren't fantastic, but it does give an indication of the size differences of the two species:
A bit later I came across a puddle on the road, parked the car and waited, hoping that the Budgerigars would need a drink, I wasn't disappointed:

Really lovely photographs. Aren't tree hollows important in a land of parrots!!
ReplyDeleteHi Russell, yep. And tree logs for lots of other things. Was at a spot recently where the local said "don't kick the logs down to the right, likely to get a huge, angry western brown snake coming out to state his displeasure at having his house kicked." Needless to say, I went left!
DeleteCute and intelligent little fellows
ReplyDeleteA very pleasant reportage and lovely pics!
I've got something you will like on my blog just now!!!
Cheers, Richard!
Thanks Noushka, you might add "noisy" as well! Loved the MMCs on your blog.
Delete-Oh, good photos.
ReplyDeleteIn your area there are a lot of different birds!
Greetings from Salamanca (Spain)
Thank you Miguel, yes, I am very fortunate to live in such a bird-rich area. Thanks for your comments.
DeleteI'm wondering where these photos were taken; I haven't read through your blog yet to find out more. Would love to see the budgerigars in full force like you have shared here
ReplyDeleteHi Carole,
DeleteThese photos were taken just south of Alice Springs township, but before you leave the Alice Springs area, about level with the airport, but on the Todd River flats. Thanks for looking at the blog. Cheers, Richard
