Black-winged Stilts behaving badly

I watched an unusual behaviour today by some Black-winged Stilts. I don't know why they were behaving the way they were, maybe it is mating season, or maybe they were just mucking around, but I haven't witnessed this sort of behaviour at any time previously. There was a lot of squawking involved, and quite a few times some of them were dunked underwater.

Black-winged Stilts

"You are mine!"

"I always wanted to be a bird of prey!"

"I'll stand the mark, you watch the goal umpire!"

"You need a dip!"

"1 against two, not fair!"

"I'm coming to help!"

  1. Amazing photos. I also have no idea what they are doing. It must have something to do with breeding although I don't even know if they breed in Australia.
