I was at the Poo Ponds today and Will from Power and Water came to get me to help identify a wader he had not seen before. Below are some photos. The bird looks similar to a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and to confuse things, the photo below shows the unknown bird on the far left flying in front of a group of Sharpies:
The next photo is a size comparison with a black-winged stilt, there are two in the photo I think one is a juvenile (the one on the right):
The next 2 are of the (I think) juvenile then the adult:
Will was certain he had not seen this bird before, and it bobbed only its head as opposed to the head and body by the Sharpies. We had to stay a fair way away as the birds were easily spooked hence the photos aren't very close and with the car going, I had trouble with focussing, but I think this furthers my need for my new lens which will not be too far away :-)!
Please leave any suggestions via the comments area.
Cheers,
Richard

Richard, I'm hopeless at waders (or anything brown). Are you thinking Pectoral Sandpipers? If they're not sharpies I think that's the only one I can think of. I saw a pec in Qld and put it on my blog a while back. I e-mailed a friend who's pretty spot on with ids with a link to this so hopefully he'll get back to us. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Russell, much appreciated. Will look forward to your friends comments.
